Betterman: Sakura Akamatsu (Episode 3)
This is where Sakura was sensing danger in a plane where Keita, Hinoki and the scientist Miyako Asami were heading to the Mode Warp facility to test if Keita has the genetic traits to be a mecha pilot. However, the flight turns into a living nightmare when the main pilot seats are found completely empty, and the cargo hold broken open to reveal an army of murderous, lifelike crash-test dummies that explode once you hugged them.

Or rather it's a part of the Brave series that takes place within the same universe of GaoGaiGar. Speaking of Sunrise, there are two other mecha anime I know that captured the same Evangelion tone and experimental style: Brain Powerd and Gasasaki.

But ye, now that I think back Sunrise had quite a few attempts cause there's also DT Eightron(1998). Those all predate Betterman, though Gasaraki was more 'mecha realism' and featured a lot of predictive programing leading up to the Global War on Terrorism. I'd say Betterman was still the quintessential Eva paragon of Sunrise, with its brooding, somber atmosphere, biomechs, cosmic horror monsters. Everything trying to be a pretentious, psychological mindfuck, but most certainly its archetypes. Down to the angsty pilots, detached scientist lady and cold fish heroine.
