ReplyDeleteWhich is ironic as she was always a TAS original, created just to be her Mr. J's main squeeze (or punching bag, which ever he preferred). Actually however, Paul Dini wanted Harley smashing clams with Ivy ever since the later first season, just, you know, kids show and all.
Also also, Adam Glass's redesign always felt more 'crazy edge for the sake of crazy edge', completely missing the plot.
Well, Gay wasn’t exactly 100% excepted back in the 90s. I mean just look at Sailor Moon, two of the sailor Scouts (Uranus & Neptune) were a couple but because the 90s wasn’t ready for gay couples yet they had to redub it & say the two were “cousins” because you know that made it less awkward.

Back then media just didn't really make it a point until Ellen. Before idpol, it was more subtle. Now with children's cartoons... well... Kids shouldn't even know about straight sex.
Jap media is whole other animal though. Just detached from idpol culture, it's more considered a 'sensual'(fetish) thing due to what were the acceptable codes regarding carnal pleasures in Shintoism and history of pederasty and okama. Forbidden in Buddhism though, but buddhists were also pederast hypocrites. And even though Sailor Moon, with its themes, is still regarded as a kids show over there(shit, even Evangelion is) so it's easily disregarded as 'just entertainment' due to difference in cultural sensibilities. Plus it aired during 'family viewing' times (non-late-night anime) which would still allow for strong themes. Themes like incest, gayness, suicide or abuse had a shock factor and just made for more exciting entertainment and interesting family discussion. Moto Hagio's "They were Eleven" and characters like Baron Ashura and Berg Katse are other 'shocktainment' examples.
