Supergirl Celebration Part 11: Arrowverse Supergirl (Melissa Benoist)

Today's Supergirl tribute is dedicated to Arrowverse Supergirl. This version of her was part of a regular live action series. She was portrayed by the actress Melissa Benoist.

We do get a few rare barefoot moments of Supergirl scattered throughout the series

Below cap is a scene from Supergirl where she was sparring with the Martian Manhunter. She teasingly sticks her boot in his face.

There's also this behind the scenes image where Melissa's heel wound up getting damaged during filming causing her to take it off.
Melissa is also a fantastic singer something that we get to see in a couple of Musical crossover between Supergirl and the Flash series. Before Supergirl, Melissa was one of leads in the Musical Dramedy series Glee. She performed a cover of Miley's Series Wrecking ball barefoot wearing blue which is very on brand for the Superheroine role that she would later play. :-)

You can see her full performance of this number below.

And for more fun some additional foot focused images of Melissa as well.

(Various caps from the Supergirl series and pictures of Melissa. I would be remiss in not giving Melissa's Wikifeet page a shoutout for helping me obtain most of these caps)

As part of a regular series, this version of Supergirl had the most screentime but sadly she rarely shows her bare feet on the series. It quite frustrating that despite the Supergirl series she was in ran for six seasons there is hardly any in series foot scenes of Melissa to showcase. One of the things that probably prevented us from getting more barefoot content was that Melissa has a foot tattoo. I suspect the production team just found it easier to cover her feet up in socks for intimate moments inside her apartment.

I actually watched every single episode of this series so I know its highs and lows. It did have great episodes and moments. Some of the the highlights include its crossovers with other Arrowverse series and some exciting villains and fights. Surprisingly, one of my favorites aspects of the series was Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor. Evil Alan does exist. 🤣 The crossovers in this were also legendary where they managed to squeeze in appearances from classic actors such as Burt Ward (1960's Robin) and Linda Carter (Classic Television Wonder Woman). They also managed to adapt Crisis on Infinite Earths in the series in a large scale crossover event.

Unfortunately the series did have its downsides as well. It aired during the height of the Me Too movement and tried to Champion Diversity to the point where the stories started taking a backseat. Comic books have tackled Society issues for a long time. A big example is X-men having allegories to prejudice. However the Supergirl series seemed to feel it was enough include Lesbian characters, Transgender characters and relationships as its selling point. We wound up getting long sequences setting up these diverse characters and relationships when we should have been getting more action scenes of Supergirl taking on villains which is really what the majority of comic book fans would prefer. There were points where the show was completely unwatchable.

Despite the problems with the show. I feel like Melissa made an Amazing Supergirl. She was fun and quirkly but still really delivered some great action scenes. She had some great moments in her run that really made me smile. ^_^ My favorite scenes with her were the first crossover she had with the Flash.

Ok everyone...still a few more Supergirl posts to come!

Thank you for reading and Up Up and Away!!!
