Supergirl Celebration Part 7: 1984 Movie Supergirl

 Ok continue with the Supergirl celebration. Our next version of Supergirl is the 1984 movie version. The film was a spin-off of the Christopher Reeves Superman films.  The Supergirl film wasn't a success at the box office and did not get a sequel to it but it does have its own cult following. Supergirl in the film was portrayed by the actress Helen Slater who do definitely looks the part.

Adventures in A.I. 1 : Supergirl (Gliphy) (Supergirl Celebration Tie-in)

This version of Supergirl was the first version of the character I was exposed to. I didn't really like the film very much when I first saw it. Similar to the current Supergirl comic book series it leans a little too heavy into Supergirl's science fiction background which made for a really weird/trippy story line making it hard for viewers to connect with the character . The film does have good cast with some famous actors such as Peter O'Toole, Faye Dunaway and Mia Farrow but this film didn't provide them with any standout performances. 

Helen Slater made a pretty good Supergirl. She is really attractive and captured the character well but did not have a good storyline that she could really shine under. It would have been fun to see more of her as Supergirl.

An interesting side bit of trivia is that Helen Slater was given a recurring cameo role in the CW Supergirl series as a nod to movie role. She played the mother of Supergirl's adopted Earth family Eliza Danvers. She had an additional cameo as Supergirl in the Flash movie.
