Suomi is a skilled Finnish ice skater who was almost on Finland's national team until an accident sidelined her. This led to a falling out with her best friend. After meeting a young boy who is going through something similar she is motivated to get back into skating. Suomi means Finland in Finnish.
Atsuko is a young woman who lives and works in her mothers food store. Her mother is deeply in debt after her husband died and set up Atsuko for an arranged marriage to a wealthy young man named Minoru. Atsuko is opposed to this both because of the choice being taken away and the feeling Minoru is taking the proposal for granted. She also starts dating an older man named Kenji.
